Makizuka Iron Works

A quiet legend from Takamatsu has finally stepped beyond Japan’s shores.

We’re deeply proud to welcome Makizuka Iron Works to Toronto — and for the very first time, outside of Japan. Tucked away in the coastal city of Takamatsu, Makizuka has been quietly producing some of the most thoughtfully made iron cookware in the country. Their work is revered in Japan for its incredible durability, beautiful simplicity, and the unmistakable quality that can only come from the hands of true craftspeople.

Founded as a small family ironworks, Makizuka has spent decades perfecting its process: cutting, shaping, heating, and seasoning raw iron into cooking tools that are built not just for performance, but for a lifetime of use. Each piece is hand-forged in Takamatsu, slowly and deliberately, without shortcuts or compromises. Their philosophy is simple — tools should get better with age, not worse. And Makizuka’s cookware does exactly that.

The surface of their iron has a quiet confidence: smooth, weighty, beautifully seasoned, and built to retain and distribute heat with precision. Whether it’s their heavy teppan plates designed for even, consistent cooking or their perfectly balanced frying pans, these tools reflect a way of making that feels increasingly rare in the modern world. Our new favourite piece, the wok with hoak combo.

Makizuka has never exported their work before. Their production is small by choice — each piece takes time, and each craftsman takes pride in every detail. Which is why it means so much to say: KNIFE is the first place in the world outside Japan to carry their work.

Bringing Makizuka to Toronto isn’t just about adding another product to our shelves. It’s about sharing a story — of quiet craft, of dedication, of making something the right way even when no one is watching. This is iron cookware built to outlast you, to live in your kitchen for decades, and to collect the patina and history of real cooking.

We’re honoured to give Makizuka’s work a home here. And we can’t wait for you to hold it, cook with it, and feel that unmistakable weight of something made with care.
