A simple ladle from the talented, design focused minds of Sori Yanagi.

Sori Yanagi (1915-2011) was a renowned Japanese industrial designer who made significant contributions to the world of modern design. He was born on February 7, 1915, in Tokyo, Japan, into a family of artists. His father, Soetsu Yanagi, was a prominent philosopher, art historian, and founder of the Mingei (folk craft) movement in Japan. The Mingei philosophy emphasized the beauty and simplicity of everyday objects created by anonymous craftsmen.

Sori Yanagi studied art and architecture at the Tokyo Art School and graduated in 1936. After completing his studies, he traveled to Europe, where he was deeply influenced by the works of iconic designers such as Charles and Ray Eames, Alvar Aalto, and Jean Prouvé. These experiences played a crucial role in shaping his design principles and approach.

In 1952, Sori Yanagi founded the Yanagi Industrial Design Institute in Tokyo. He focused on creating functional and timeless designs that celebrated the beauty of natural forms. His creations often embraced the concept of "humanity" in design, aiming to make everyday objects comfortable, accessible, and harmonious for people to use. One of his most iconic designs is the "Butterfly Stool," which he designed in 1954. The stool's distinctive shape, reminiscent of butterfly wings, was achieved through molding thin plywood. It became an instant classic and remains an emblem of mid-century modern design to this day.

Another famous creation by Sori Yanagi is the "Yanagi kettle" (also known as the "Tetsubin" or "Bunbuku Chagama") designed in 1953. This cast iron kettle features a simple, elegant shape and became highly regarded for its functionality and aesthetics, embodying the essence of Japanese craftsmanship.

Sori Yanagi's designs earned him numerous accolades and international recognition throughout his career. His works have been exhibited in major design museums worldwide, and he received prestigious awards such as the Good Design Award and the Japanese Medal of Honor with Purple Ribbon.

Sori Yanagi's design philosophy has had a lasting impact on the design community, inspiring generations of designers to seek simplicity, functionality, and harmony in their creations. His dedication to creating objects that enrich people's lives with beauty and practicality continues to be celebrated, and his designs remain highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts alike.
