Ibonia Estate
Just three miles from Kiambu Town lies Ibonia Estate, a 200-hectare property where meticulously farmed coffee sits alongside natural forests, wetlands, and wildlife corridors. This harmony between cultivation and untouched ecology shapes a coffee that is both structured and sensorially rich—an elegant expression of Kenya’s most classic varietals: SL28 and SL34.
With rich red Kikuyu loam soils, ideal rainfall patterns, and attentive estate-level management, Ibonia produces coffees of remarkable density, brightness, and aromatic purity. This washed lot exemplifies the best of Kiambu’s heritage: clarity, sweetness, and a layered complexity that unfolds slowly and deliberately with each sip.
Process
Cherries are hand-harvested and pulped the same day, before undergoing a controlled fermentation and thorough washing in clean, cold water. The parchment is then dried on raised beds under the careful supervision of estate workers who monitor airflow, temperature, and moisture to achieve the polished structure Kenya is known for.
This marriage of traditional washed processing and high-level agronomic discipline produces a cup that is simultaneously bright, sweet, and texturally refined.
The cup opens with a cola-like sweetness—deep, caramelized, and effervescent—supported by fresh fig and prune undertones that lend a luxurious depth. Ripe blackberry notes introduce a crisp acidity, while the finish evokes peach tea: silky, aromatic, and softly tannic.
A beautifully balanced Kenyan washed coffee, offering both the bold clarity expected from the region and an inviting, fruit-forward warmth—akin to its origin.
